Our Ministry Where IS Chiconautla? |
| CHURCH-PLANTING
We are serving with Latin America Mission in Chiconautla, Mexico, where we are involved in church-planting and leadership training. Chiconautla is a lower-class, hillside community of 500,000 on the northern outskirts of Mexico City’s vast metropolitan area. This area has an evangelical Christian population of only 7%. Although the majority of the population have some type of church background, most have never read the Bible, and are unaware that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. Some challenges we encounter in ministry are the low levels of education in the general population, helping newcomers to the church gain enough confidence in themselves to become witnesses for Christ, and a low level of financial resources available for ministry. We also face spiritual opposition from local witch doctors and Satanist groups. In spite of these obstacles, there are many new opportunities for building God’s Kingdom in Chiconautla. There is a very high percentage of youth in the population – the average age is 22 – and young people are typically more open to the Gospel than older generations. There are also many newly developed areas nearby where the people are more open to changes, including religious changes. Evangelicals in Mexico have recently gained the support of government authorities, and we also enjoy the respect and support of other nearby congregations and pastors.
